KMD XV100SD amp head LANEY?

Postby doombuggy » Sat May 19, 2018 4:15 pm

I recently picked up a KMD 100 watt tube head that was made in England, its made well and has the biggest transformer Ive ever seen in an amp, weighs a ton, looks like the partial board type material and tolex Laney used on their cabs.
Ive been reading that these were made by Laney around the same time as the AOR amps, Ive seen the same amp under the Hohner name model Vendetta 150LVT but they used a round blue transformer instead of the massive, more common shaped transformer and it has a ohm selector that goes down to 4, along with 8/16, the KMD says 8/15 ohms. Just curious if anyone here knows the story. Sorry if this isnt in the right place :/

Ok. Here is a link to harmony central forum. It seems like KMD wasn't made by Laney. Actually tolex , speakers grills etc. used by Laney , was also used by Hiwatt , Vox , Burman and many others English amp makers. XV100SD was a flagship model including 5x12ax7 and 4x 6550 tubes, Actually KMD was making solid states amplifiers , but few tubes amplifiers made by them did not take market or interest of players, and guitarist choose everything else but KMD . That's all I was able to find.

I have the chassis out of the cab right now but I have some pics of the chassis.
Im going to cut a vent hole in the top and use a JCM800 vent cover.
I havent had any trouble with it but it gets very hot, figured this would help.

I was the national service rep for KMD in the late 80's. Those amps were made in Taiwan, along with everything else that KMD made. They were one of those amps that sounded good on their own, but would get lost in a band situation. The mids weren't aggressive enough.

If you aren't the only guitarist in a band, this amp is nearly useless.
