Help needed

Postby Murf » Mon Sep 26, 2016 7:34 pm

Hi, new to the forum and on here hoping for some info. I just picked up an old laney amp that needs a lot of tlc to get it back to its former glory. There isn't a model number on it so would like to attach a picture but not sure how. I think it's a 70's model and it has two 30w celestion g12h speakers. From left to right it has on, standby, power on light, then it has 5 dials- presence, bass, middle, treble, gain one. Followed by two lead inputs marked bass, then a gain 2 dial and two treble lead inputs. Thanks in advance for any help with I'd and dating it.

Welcome to the group. Looks like a supergroup or Pre-supergroup combo. Maybe from the late 60's. If you look in the supergroup and pre- forums here you will see pics of heads with the same appearance and control layout. Looks like a good score. Does it play well? Could you post some pics of the chassis and transformers? Cheers

Thanks for the reply, this is all I have at the minute. I emailed laney service and the guy who came back to me said it's a rare laney lc50 combo from the supergroup era, he has asked me to send pictures inside and out as they are compiling pictures of old amps and have little info on these. The laney guys on twitter say it's a supergroup combo from 1968. The controls and dials look exactly as the 100w supergroup head. It isn't working at the moment two tubes had been removed which I think we're el34s so I've ordered them and am keeping my fingers crossed.

Cool pics. Looks like the original impedance selector was removed and wired straight to the speakers. Apparently the speakers have been upgraded to later ones. You may want to have someone check it over and make sure all the wiring is good. Hope it works out with the new tubes.

Hi, just dated the speakers as November 71 from the codes on the back and around 1971 from the code on the pulsonic cone so I think they could well be original. Amp works with the two new tubes and im well pleased with the way it sounds but need to get the damaged cone sorted out. May also need the old existing tubes replaced there was the occasional squeal last night when I had a quick try. I will get an amp tech to do a service and check it over.

I thought they came with Goodman's or Fane speakers back then which is why i suggested changed speakers. Anyway, I'm glad that it's working well. Should be loud and ballsy when you get it sorted out. The voltage selector in the top of the power trans is old school. Good luck.

That thing looks sweet, is there any audio clips of it?

The soeakers look like greenbacks but they look like 2 different versions like a 55hz and a 75hz or something the magnets look different sizes
