Were SuperGroups also bass amps?

Postby kombi1976 » Thu Mar 17, 2011 12:33 am

A friend of mine has just started building tube amps and I've asked him to look for a 100w bass amp he could build for me. I haven't been able to find a schematic for the Laney Pro-Bass Tube built in the 80s but the SuperGroup certainly has a bass channel. Are SuperGroups a viable bass amp as well as a guitar amp?
Cheers & God Bless

other than stating the obvious about the treble and bass channels indicating a common versatility to 70s amps, I would imagine the 200 watt supergroup with the larger transformer would be able to manage to push more low end than the 100 watt. Saying that I have found Supergroups, while versatile, tend to produce a much darker tone than those found amongst its contemporaries such as Hi-watt.

yea, they could work...They where labeled as LBO 60/100 in the early days ( short for "Lead, Bass & Organ" ) Same w/the cabs, so they where a multi-Purpose amp back then. Guitar , Bass or Keyboards!

That's what was in the back of my mind...and yes the 100 watt won't have the balls to push a bass very far....
I'm using my Supergroup right now with my organ in a practice room, cant say as I get the best sound either however the 2X12 speaker cab could be the main culprit.

Just stating the obvious for posterity's sake, but Geezer Butler used one, but I suspect it was the 200W version. I believe there's an old Laney advert floating around on the net that explains it. Also pretty much all of Argent used SG's. There's a video or two of the whole band with them, even Rod. I used mine as a bass amp as well. I swear by it. Yes if you're playing Wembley or The Los Angeles Forum, then "the 100 watt won't have the balls to push a bass very far...." :P

Also, I've heard the Supergroups are similar/same circuit as a Mar$hall Superbass. I'll give you three guesses which instrument those were intended for ;).
