60's/70's Supergroup?

Postby joedonner2001 » Tue Jan 18, 2011 9:59 am

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum. I'm trying to accurately identify a Laney 100W amplifier head which I bought in South Africa about 20 years ago. At the time the guy I bought it from said he thought it was 16 years old already. If I remember correctly I paid him R600, which at the then exchange rate to the pound equated to approximately £85.

I now live in the UK and the amplifier is still in South Africa and being looked after by a family member until I decide what to do with it. I've asked him to text me anything he can see on the front or back of the amp and he sent this (quoted word for word, e.g. he texted "System" and not "Systems"):

Laney Sound System Ltd with serial number 5427

I emailed Laney but they say that the amp is such an early model that they have no record of it. When I google around I think the amp resembles most closely the Laney Supergroup, but I'm not sure exactly what to look out for.

I essentially want to get a decent idea of its value so I can try and sell it. It's of no use to me sitting in South Africa, and I imagine it will be too expensive to ship to the UK (it's really heavy).

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

anyway of getting a photo of the amp. The coding makes me think this is the LA100BL the amp before it was rebadged as a supergroup.

Most likely its a Pre Supergroup model...depending on the wattage & chassis style, they are basically the same as the classic supergroup line.
But a pic will tell the story for sure~!

With that serial number, it's probably a steel chassis pre-Supergroup. Is the serial number stamped on the back panel, or on a Dymo label?

I'm not sure, really. I'm waiting for pictures of the amp to be emailed to me, then I'll post them.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think it means anything. I have a couple of amps in my database around that s/n which have Dymo labels, so I was just trying to establish whether it was likely to be similar. It's probably a pre-Supergroup with a moulded plastic badge and non-Partridge transformers.

As promised, I've received pictures at last: http://cid-3014eca84197325e.office.live.com/browse.aspx/Public

I'd appreciate an insight anyone may have in dating the amplifier.

Thanks.

Yes , Most likely an early 70's Supergroup 100 watter there...
looks like the front panel was modified ( tolex over the cloth) and no badge.
great amp!

I've just added another picture with a close-up of the yellow sticker behind one of the valves. Can't quite make out what it says there, unfortunately. Anyone have any idea?

I have no idea whehter or not the front was modified. That's the way it was when I bought it.

I want to sell this amplifier, if anyone is interested. Just note that it's still in South Africa at the moment. I don't know how much it weighs or how much it would cost to send overseas, though, but happy to discuss it.

Thanks.

It looks to me like only the back panel has its original covering. The texture on the head box appears softer than the original stuff. The yellow sticker says "Partridge Transformers".

Wow, amazing amp.
I bet it sounds brilliant.
Can someone tell me what the Power Simulator out is?
Sth Africa is a fair hike from anywhere though, even from me in Oz.
What sort of money are you asking for the amp, Joe?
Cheers & God Bless

It's an output from the preamp, for connection to a slave amp.
