Laney 200 watt supergroup..how do they perform

Postby pombagira » Sat Dec 04, 2010 10:53 am

As I am seeing what's been going down on the forum, I began thinking about the couple of 200 watt Laney Supergroups I have seen for sale over the last couple of years. Am I right in thinking these came with six EL34s? Does anyone own one and I wondered how they compare with the 100 watt. I am also wondering what the thinking was behind making a 200 watt amp when the 100 watts were so powerful.

cant say I've ever seen or heard a 200..would be interesting.. Lordy if they're anything like Blackmore's Majors (also, 200+ watts, some were believed to have even been closer to 350 or more..) they'd have to be horrific loud..

well that's what I was thinking as well. Two have slipped through my fingers at the very last moment, they don't command the same kind of money as the 100 watt supergroup. I had heard the tone wasn't as good as the 100 watt. I was also wondering how the amps produces 200 watts or more with 6 el34s, because having had a 200 watt transformer into a sound city 120, the plate load was all over the place and in fact John Chambers figured out that the only way to get the plate load close to what it should be you would have to run the amp at the incorrect ohamge settings, for example a 4 ohm cab would mean the amp would be on 8 ohms. It worked a treat. So yes it would be great to hear from someone who has one of these beauties.

trying to recall exactly where I heard of it,but supposedly 6 x el34 @200 watts isnt entirely out reason...

some discussion of the matter-although for other amps here:

as far as tone, no idea since I've not heard one...Blackmore often complained that his 200 watt Majors were incredibly loud, but not exactly "tonefull" ..

The Supergroup 200s had six EL34s. I've seen photos of a couple, but have no experience with one. I do have an earlier 200, circa '68, which has four KT88s. I've never run it flat out but I get the feeling it would stay pretty clean. B+ is 860V (900V with no load).

It has the biggest transformers I've ever seen. Here's the chassis next to a 100W Marshall:

That looks incredible, where did you get this 200, and how much did you pay for this amp?

It was £90, but it did need some work: all new valves, filter caps and restoration of the cabinet. It had been badly re-covered and was not working when I bought it.

£90!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When was this? I would pay this in a second for one of these beauties, even with it not working..Do you know how many of these 200 watt amps were actually made. Well if you ever decide to sell it please contact me first that's all I need to say
