New Member - making a cabinet for Cub12R

Postby JPRockDinosaur » Wed Nov 14, 2018 10:42 am

Hi all,
I've just purchased a Cub12R which I love. Its got the HH 12" driver which I'm considering replacing OR I have an old stingray Combo I was considering converting into a 2x12 Cab for the Laney.
So my question is would I see better improvement in the over all sound by kitting the cub with a GB128 or V30 clone, or doing rigging up a 2x12 open back cab with these instead? Secondly will I see much improvement over the HH in either case (in which case I'll stick with what I have.

I dont gig anymore so this is purely just for my own indulgent fun, playing rolling stones, Sabbath and van Halen at home.

Guitars: Epi les Paul Tribute Plus, 1988 Ibanez RG550
Amps : Cub12R, VoxVT+, Carlsboro Stingray (retired)

Thanks all!

Hi :D
Actually this is matter of taste , but IMHO external cab will improve your sound a lot and 2x 12 or 10 gonna make superior job. If you like to build and have a tools you can build cabinet by yourself, or you can buy really cheap used one. Mostly Guitar Center got a lot of used cabs 1x12 or 2x12 with price tag about or less than 100 bucks.

Thanks Polsky,
I took your advice and got 2 used HH1270 drivers off ebay from a gent doing a cab project (be sure and check out Kemp Guitars - some beautiful hand made custom electrics).
I swapped these into my old Carlsboro stingray combo and turned it into a cab for my cub12. It sounds fantastic, plenty of headroom and so much more oomph. Now wondering what to do with the old Medusa 30s I took out of it ;)
Cheers!

JPRock..I'm happy it work for you :D . I have build a lot of cabinets lately, and they sounds so great. Also tried a lot of speakers and believe old HH are much better than new ones. Other speakers I like are Jensen Jet Electric Lightning. I had 'em installed in my IRT 60 then combo. Sick speakers. But as I said...external cab always sounds great with any combo.

Cheers :D
