Cabinet I.D. Help!!! w/pix now

Postby billy_magnum » Sat Jun 14, 2008 7:11 pm

Hi I have what appears to be a vintage Laney 4x12 cabinet but I have no idea what model it is. The logo on the front is not like the newer "cut-out" logo's, it a rectangle with Laney printed on it. It has one input and the tag on the bottom says impedance:16 Power:280w serial G15041 or could be GlS04l? The serial is hand written so I don't know if they are "l's" or "1's"/"s's" or "5's" you know? Any help in identifying this cabinet would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It's the same Laney AOR/Pro Tube Series cabinet that I run. Probably has the Celestion G12M-70s in it, too. Stock, they run 16 ohms, as you can see. I re-wired mine for 4 ohms, a few years ago, when I was using a different head before my AOR 50 watter. These were around during the mid to late 80s. Heavy as hell. Plastic amp corners like the AOR heads. Decent cab for the money. Bought mine for $200. I'd like to swap the speakers out and try a quad of Warehouse Guitar Speakers Veteran 30s, and see if it improves things at all.

Thanks for the help. I just tested it with a crappy Marshall head and was surprised how good it sounded. Much tighter low end than I expected. Thanks again.

Huh? I just bought one of those too, and mine has 16-ohm HH speakers in it. Sounds pretty damn good though :)...

Well, not all of them came with Celestions. Mine just happened to.

So it's probably still an AOR cab, even though it's got HH? Good to know :)...

Has anyone else got some more info on these things? Any idea what they're made of? Decent wood? Crappy? All I can tell (don't want to take off the tolex or anything like that) is that it's heavy as HELL...

That's the downside to mine. Looks like it's made of cheap particle board. Heavy as hell, though, and have never had an issue with it (knock on wood)

Damn... how can you tell? Mine looks like a regular board of wood on the inside...

I could easily tell by the texture of the material. the surface, internally, for the most part on mine, are bare. No actual woodgrain present is a tip-off.

Yeah I'm quite certain the Pro Tube/AOR cabs are particle board.

can anyone help fill me in on how to do this too? Id rather it be @4 ohms. Also bonus question if anyone knows the correct way to wire a Marshall 1960A cab? It came without any wires inside...thank you.
