Cab for Klipp 100

Postby Fresher Potonga » Fri Jun 26, 2009 12:54 pm

Hey Guys.

I am new in this forum and try to get some info.
Just bought an old Klipp 100 and I am very pleased with that.
I had a VOX A 30 from the 60's for 25 years before and I do not miss it at all!
I do also have an old Matamp GT 120 but even this can not hold up to the sound of the Klipp
I was wondering if someone can give me infos about the original cabs according to speakers, impedance etc.
or even better if someone has one to sell.

Cheers from Germany

You just have to look for the basic Laney 4x12 s, that where made at these times, for the (amplifier / head) series.
Ie; Supergroup ( or LBO before ) Good luck finding one of those!
Is like finding hens teeth!

Here is a very early Laney Lead 100 cabinet (Supergroup ?)
My guess, it is approx. from 1968.

How strikingly similar these cabs are to the old Park cabs! :o

Usually they came with Goddmans speakers.
The GREEN Goodmans speaker are 25 watters, ( Red are 50 Watters)

and here´s another Laney cabinet from 1969

Also, the KLIPP era 4x12 cabs looked just like KLIPPS (amplifier heads)..... Sparkly grill cloth & "L" Laney Logo.
These are scarce too, but sometimes pop up in UK / Euro.
I think this is what you are looking for your amp (Klipp).
I believe they were made, from 1972 - 1976.

Goodmans or sometimes Celestion Greenbacks is what they came with.

Thanks man!
This things seem to be older then the Klipp as you imagined, there is another gloss.
And I love this reverse Silverface thing.
Unfortunatly the big L on mine is not there...

Are the Goodmanns good speakers?
heard it was a cheap alternativ for celestion at that time.
I do use my old Matamp cab with some special celestions with metallic inner cab with the Klipp now.
This cab is sounding better then every other I tested so far, because it brings out the bass
and trebs even very loud and is not cauphing like a Arse-hall-cab.
But I do intend to sell the Matamp Halfstack together, so I will need another cap.

Do you have some expirience with the newer Laney cabs (front loaded),
because there are not very expensive over here.
(200-300€ used)

Well, first I have to admit my preference for old Celestions from late 60´s ´ early 70´s ;
but Goodman speakers were considered upgrade speakers in several British amps in the 60´s and from high quality, (btw, they made all kinds of speakers,) and so long as they were intended for guitar/instruments, they are defenitely not bad, also the ceramic magnet speakers from the 70´s in the 20-50 watt range, sounds good to me. 8)
Generally I don´t like front loaded cabs, :| (like AOR 4x12 or any other manufacturer).
Rear loaded cabinets are warmer, have a bigger bottom and low mids,
of course in a band context you won't hear a difference, it's subtile.
Front loading gives you more of the speakers sound and rear loading gives you more of the cabs sound.
A newer Laney GS 4X12 might work and would be an "OK cab", but TOO MODERNISTIC. I wouldn´t go this road.
And furthermore, of course soundwise 500 miles apart from a good vintage Speaker. This is not a real surprise, cause what you pay is what you get and a good vintage speaker all alone, 60´s / early 70´s Celestions for example, each speaker would cost $ 200 - $ 300 (in good condition).

Your "new" cab should look like this, to match your head and complete your halfstack :)

I have a really clean Laney (I think Klipp era) 4x12, loaded with Goodmans I am going to sell, as well as a clean 100 watt Supergroup head. I'm in North Carolina, in the states. Best of luck!
