KT77

Postby ProzaKc » Mon Feb 19, 2007 11:48 pm

I'm thinking of buying a pair from the Tubestore.
Anybody try these in a Pro Tube Lead?

KT77 won't fit, it would be a mojor mod to the amp. The KT77 are bigger in diameter.

Should be a drop in for EL34 amps. The question will be if they can be biased properly. My AOR runs a little cold so I may have a little room for movement.

Get em' biased and try them out.

To address what the good Dr. was speaking of any of the tube resellers could give you the dimensions to make sure tubes will fit in your amp, diameter and height.

((tube max dissipation wattage / amp plate voltage) x % of max dissipation wattage) x 1000 = bias current in mA

Interesting, I always thought KT77s weren't much bigger than the 34s. At least not so much so that they wouldn't fit...

KT77's or KT88's Dr. ? Was it diameter or height he was concerned about? I know what you typed before, I was just double checking.

Glad to see you in the neighborhood. ;)

EDIT: Bob would be the one in the know being JJ's are his business.

I am such a dumb ass, I am sorry guys. Here is what Bob wrote:

We are fairly certain the KT88 will physically not fit in the AOR 50, but for the record to use the KT88's you need to have at least 2 1/4" measured from center to center of your tube sockets because the KT88's are 2 1/8" in diameter. There would also need to be sufficient throw in the bias circuit to accommodate them, so they could come in around 55 to 60mA.

Here is what he said about his KT77s

The new KT77's would also be an option. These are not quite a tight as the E34L but tighter than an EL34. The 77's have even a bit more low end extension than the E34L's and they have a nice sizzle in the top end that is not brittle. The clean tone is very fat and full and the crunch has more of a chunk to it and it's very punchy but not quite as aggressive as the E34L. A great tube for rhythm and solo work.

No worries Dr. It is always interesting to see how Bob characterizes a tube. Thanks for the info.

KT88's are big aren't they. :) Mmmmm............ tube porn. Thanks for the idea Ritz.

Dr.,

Thought you might have had the 77s and 88s mixed up there. The KT77 is basically the "KT" equivalent of the EL34, and should be a drop in replacement... I think the 77s should bias up ok in most EL34 amps.
