Laney AOR 50W Problem

I recently purchased an AOR 50 Watt Pro Tube head. I'm not sure what model exactly, it was made in 1987. When I first got it it was loud, it was just really muddy and I heard some crackling which gave me the idea of changing the tubes. I never changed the tubes, but then another thing caught my ear. I have a Marshall valvestate 8100 head which is a 100watt solid state head, and is SO much louder than the AOR. From my experience with tube heads, the 50watt tube heads are much louder than what's coming out of my Laney. I want to know if anyone's had this problem before. Maybe it's the tubes. They all seem to light up. I'm kinda new with this so maybe you I can get some help... Thanks.

What colour are they lighting up? A healthy orangey-yellow glow is normal, but if the plates (the metal parts inside) start glowing red hot, then you have trouble.

If it's a head (not a combo) be sure you are using a speaker cable, not a guitar cable to hook the head to your cabinet, and be sure the impedance settings on the amp and the cab match.
