help:Laney aor 50 not working

Postby Newtolaney » Mon Feb 18, 2008 6:36 pm

Hello, my name is Matt, and I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a pro tube 50 from a guy on craigslist. The amp worked seemingly fine when I tried it out at his house, got it back to my apartment and the amp played for about 6 minutes, then I shut it down because it was late. The next day I went to play the amp, and I got nothing. The guy told me that it needed new power amp tubes, so I put in tubes, replaced the fuses, and I still have nothing. I don not hear anything coming out of my cabinet. I have the amp set to 110v (in the U.S.), I have the output selctor set to 16 ohms, and run one speaker cable out to the 16 ohm input of my marshall 4x12(which came with the head). Any thoughts on why the amp would stop working over night? and not work with new tubes? Please give me any help you can. This is a terrific forum.

Matt

Does the valves(Tubes light up?) If not check the sockets. Do it anyway :-)
Did you change the output selector? Check that. Probably all about Oxide.

That's a good suggestion- look to see if any valves aren't glowing. I'd try a listen at the line out stage to see if the signal gets that far - also see what's getting warm (or not) when it is on - transformers etc too. Was there any electrical burning smells at any point? Were any fuses burnt out?

By the way - you might know this, but in case you didn't - you can't just put new power valves in without rebiasing them to check they are drawing the right current together. That is to say - you can just put new valves in but they won't last long! Did you just put them in yourself?

I think a good clean around contacts might fix this problem magically

A similar thing happened to me when I PLUGGED MINE IN FOR ITS FIRST LIVE OUTING sorry caps lock... and after 10 mins of frustration, no noise or hiss outta the cab, i just sat back and looked carefully, and noticed the impedence selector was stuck between to settings, (must have got knocked in transit) et voila, all was well.
