To increase the gain,pay particular attention to the first two pre amp valves.If you check out Watford valves site you can get the required info on the working output of the different makes.For example , to clean up the amp use GE ecc83's as they work at 80% compared to JJ' ecc83s.(think Fenderish sound)
I had to do this to clean up a VC50 which had too much initial gain.Unfortunately GE valves are not cheap but then again they would not suit your cause anyway as you want to step up the gain. There is plenty of choice available at reasonable cost- but I would start with the ever reliable JJ's myself .Upon reflection ,I had to remove a pair of Ei valves for having too much initial gain in the VC50.
